WHAT ARE FAMILY INTERVENTIONS?
Family Interventions are a set of structured meetings or sessions for families and the family member who experiences mental health difficulties. Using a genuine empathic and non-judgemental approach, family work aims to enable the exploration and understanding of the often distressing nature of mental health problems, and to consider these within the context of family beliefs.
In an environment where there is a strong emphasis on listening to what families require, family workers tailor interventions in specific ways according to the individual needs of each family, identifying helpful ways of dealing with specific problems they encounter.
WHY DO WE OFFER FAMILY WORK/FAMILY INTERVENTIONS
The rationale for implementing this service development is based on an impressive body of evidence that clearly demonstrates the value of working alongside families, with the aim of reducing distress for people experiencing mental health difficulties. Much research and evidence shows working with families enables strategies to be developed or strengthened, helping individuals experiencing mental health problems and their family members during their recovery journey.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE SESSIONS?
With an emphasis on collaboration and openness the sessions aim to:
- Help family members draw attention to their
- Build on family strengths and resources
- Reduce the risk of relapse
- Increase effective communication between
mental health workers and family members
- Develop and strengthen problem solving techniques

WHO CAN ACCESS THE SESSIONS?
Sessions would generally involve the family, the family member and two co-workers. The sessions would be facilitated by the same two workers once family interventions commence. This would ensure continuity and promote trust. Although we call this service ‘family’ interventions it is also available for other relatives, carers or friends who know the individual well.
WHAT LENGTH OF TIME DO THE SESSIONS CONTINUE FOR?
The course of sessions is dependent upon desired outcomes, what each family would like from the meetings. Sessions usually encompass fortnightly meetings for approximately 12 weeks, we would always look to extend this period if needed
